Chemise Sisters of Mercy vintage point unique Bauhaus Joy officiel Division Cure punk gothBrand:Screen Stars Fit:Regular Size Type:Regular Department:Unisex Adults Type:T-Shirt Character:Stitch Size:L Color:Black Theme:Punk To call this an original vintage promo tee for "Merciful Release" would be correct, but to be accurate, "Merciful Release" is a label, not an album--but this is exactly why this is one of the coolest, purest Sisters shirts out there (and originals at affordable prices are getting increasingly difficult to obtain, as you may have noticed). Andrew Eldritch, the indisputable driving force behind the band, never one to suffer fools gladly, was constantly warring with his record companies, and by no means unreasonably. I like to think of him, actually, as the British counterpart to Anton Newcombe, front man and driving force behind The Brian Jonestown Massacre (one officiel of my personal favorites). Both men have always been somewhat controversial: artistically uncompromisable to the point of near self-immolation. Constant feuding between bandmates
and the suits: botched deals and aborted projects, breached contracts and warring factions, hard feelings and internecine rivalries--these were never easy men to get along with. But again, in both cases, something about the stew of it all produced some of the best music of the late 20th century and beyond. (Im old enough to remember the Sisters of Mercy/Public Enemy double bill of the early 90s. Whoever dreamed that up mustve had some lofty ideals: mixing long haired goths with hip-hop fans with clocks around their necks. More often than not, the goths simply left after the opening act--which of course was Sisters--but eventually the tour had to be scrapped completely due to escalating tensions, leaving some high-minded promoter holding the bag.) Every so often, "Lucrecia My Reflection" will start pumping through the sound system at the local dive bar here in Houston, and suddenly the whole atmosphere changes. Such a simple composition (that deep, repetitive bassline), it sort of compels everyone to
move. People do laps, just to see how others are reacting to the song (who
knows it--with whom can I
relate over this?). In the scheme of things, there arent very many of us (diehard Sisters fans)--but among us, theres no denying the bond, the like-mindedness (do you even know a Sisters of Mercy fan whom you dislike?). Knowing and loving them might say more about
us than any other singular factor. Integrity and the refusal to compromise in the context of the music business is a rare enough thing. And this is precisely why the Sisters never put out a bad recording
and why they never "broke big." And that suits us just fine, doesnt it? Eldritch and Avalanche.Eternally, uncompromisingly dope.
